Idris Elba faces off against a man-eating lion in this enjoyable if rather silly survival thriller from Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur (2 Guns, Everest). Elba stars as Dr Nate Samuels, a recently widowed father who travels to South Africa in the hope of reconnecting with his two teenage daughters. The family is hosted by an old game reserve-owning friend (Sharlto Copley), who can't wait to guide them on safari, but their first foray into the wild swiftly goes awry when they stumble upon the remains of the latest big-cat attack. A suspenseful 90 minutes follows, although the attempts at a deeper emotional core, including flashbacks and dream sequences, come off a little trite, while an intriguing conflict between poachers and anti-poachers is glimpsed but never fully probed. But there are some fun performances - especially from Copley as an animal lover who really gets put through the wringer - and Kormákur's accomplished direction ensures this is a solidly tense affair.
