Well, that’s potentially a brief appearance for someone we’d assumed was a central character in True Detective season two.

No sooner were we introduced to Colin Farrell’s growly, miserable cop Ray Velcoro than he got both barrels at point blank range.

Yes, that’s right. One minute, Velcoro was shown paying a visit to a property he thought may have been used in the murder of corrupt city official Ben Caspar, the next it looks as if he’s been killed himself, with his assailant standing over him and firing more pellets into his chest for good measure. Boom.

So is Velcoro really dead?

SPOILER ALERT NUMBER 2. WE HAVE SEEN EPISODE THREE SO DO NOT READ ON IF YOU WANT TO BE KEPT IN THE DARK

Actually it turns out that the mystery shooter was just using buck shot and Velcoro will live to fight another day.

But the chances are he’s still not going to be too happy about what happened…
