Films following events in an English stately home have long held an attraction for American audiences. This one has the unusual distinction of being told by the ancestral pile itself. Based on a novel by Rumer Godden, it was advertised by RKO as "just about the most wonderful love story ever filmed". One hates to contradict such an illustrious mogul as Sam Goldwyn, but it is nothing of the sort. However, David Niven gives a good account of himself as the hot-blooded lover in the first half and the wise old head in the second.
