Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The more poignant and darker tones of the original Broadway hit may have been somewhat Disneyfied, but Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's magical musical still makes a potent transfer to the screen under the stewardship of director Rob Marshall (Chicago). Using such fairy-tale favourites as Cinderella, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood to craft a new fable, the story focuses on a baker and his wife as they attempt to break a witch's curse so that they might have a child. Unfortunately their actions cause no one to live happily ever after in this storybook satire where the songs No One Is Alone and Children Will Listen speak volumes about taking responsibility for one's actions in times of emotional upheaval. Meryl Streep (as the witch), Chris Pine (as a dashing prince) and Johnny Depp (as a sleazy wolf) give the standout performances in this entirely sung-through spectacle.
