Forty years ago, Monty Python's Flying Circus burst onto television without much attention at all.

Screened on BBC2 from 1969 to 1974, each short series did earn an increasing following, yet it would really only be in the years since that Monty Python would become the incredible phenomenon it is today. Four decades of stage shows, films, books and phrases that have entered the language. It launched the careers of John Cleese, Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin - and is still seen around the world.

With all that, can you really pick out just a few sketches as being the best of Monty Python? Yes. It's just that everybody's list will be different.

Python star Terry Jones, for instance, tells Radio Times these two are among his absolute favourites:

The Lumberjack Song

The TV show finished in 1974 but Monty Python was really only beginning: watch the touring stage show's version of The Lumberjack Song.

You can find a huge selection of Python sketches plus new interview material on the official Monty Python's Life of Brian.

Ministry of Silly Walks

To this day, you'll see people doing this. John Cleese is in charge of granting government licences for silly walks.

What Have the Romans…

Yes, sanitation, yes, aqueducts, roads… But apart from the sanitation, the aqueducts and the roads, what have the Romans done for us? From Monty Python's Life of Brian.

I love them all, of course, but I wonder why we never see the "New Brain" sketch. Of course it doesn't beat "Silly Walks", "Lumberjack", "Spam", etc., but I think it's really funny.

A difficult choice, but has to be the cheese shop sketch; "Venezuelan Beaver Cheese?"

For me it's definitely the dead parrot sketch.

My favourite sketch is the chocolate shop sketch. I think it's absolutely hilarious. I also love the red indians in the theatre "Me heep big fan Cicely Courtneidge". And I love the science fiction sketch where everyone turns into red-bearded scotsmen.
