Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to be the biggest game release of all time, a fact not lost on those in the industry as other studios scramble to avoid it at all costs.

Aside from its initial reveal and two subsequent delays, GTA 6 now looks set for its November release date.

But while any changes to that schedule mean annoyance for players, the lack of a trailer 3 – or any news and marketing for that matter – has other studios biting their nails.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy producer Eric Chort detailed how GTA 6 fears have impacted Asobo Studio's own release plans.

"All along the production, we were like, 'Okay, our release date could be this year – and there's GTA'," Chort began. "All the studios in the world were thinking about it.

"When you know that GTA is coming, you know that in terms of marketing, in terms of players the time to play games, GTA is like the ogre, it's the biggest one.

On how Asobo has opted to deal with the looming spectre of GTA, Chort continued:

"You try to adapt. You try to avoid it. But then this year, we see that there are only good games, or at least a lot of good games, so we're like, 'Okay, that's the industry', and we try to make the best game possible.

"As a studio, this is the best you can do. You try to make the best game possible with what you have – the more authentic one. Have your identity make it different, try to make it different from all the other ones.

"After that, you've done your best and you'll see. But definitely, it's an odd year to go out."

The desperate attempts to avoid GTA 6 have resulted in many studios opting to release several months earlier, as is the case with A Plague Tale Legacy, while others have pushed their releases into 2027 instead.

Interestingly, this has had a secondary effect on the industry, creating a second danger zone for developers in September, with the month now full of heavy hitters.

This includes a two-day period in which Silent Hill: Townfall, Control Resonant and Onimusha: Way of the Sword are all set to debut, only weeks after both The Blood of Dawnwalker and Marvel's Wolverine.

Whether this gambit will pay off in the end remains to be seen, but what is undoubtedly true is that until mid-November, we are all living in the shadow of Rockstar Games.
