GTA 6 file size rumour suggests you're going to want to free up some storage space

Games are becoming bigger and bigger all the time, going from tens to hundreds of gigabytes in recent years.

So it's probably of little surprise to hear that Grand Theft Auto 6 – one of the biggest games ever – will not be going easy on your hard drive if recent leaks are to be believed.

While we all wait for trailer 3 to land, leakers and insiders have been hard at work digging up anything and everything they can on the game, and that includes file size.

Noted GTA reporters GTA 6 Intel declared in a now-deleted article that "the GTA 6 file size is expected to be 'just under 200GB'".

For comparison, after years of updates, GTA 5 requires between 100-110GB of storage to install, while 2018's Red Dead Redemption 2 requires as much as 150GB depending on the platform.

Considering GTA 6 is set to be one of, if not the biggest game of all time in terms of scale, budget, sales and more, it's perhaps to be expected that the game would rack up a mammoth file size to boot.

But in terms of modern games, 200GB for a game the size of GTA 6 actually seems rather small when you compare it with some of its peers.

Last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 requires more than 200GB to install, when including Warzone, Zombies and the Campaign, and Modern Warfare 4 will no doubt match or surpass that later this year.

Meanwhile, God of War Ragnarök, a less-than-30-hour single-player game, required 190GB of storage.

But all three pale in comparison to perhaps the most bloated file size in gaming history, with ARK: Survival Evolved requiring a frankly preposterous 400-450GB to install when including all DLC and expansions.

So, when you frame it like that, 200GB for GTA 6 actually doesn't seem too bad, right?

No doubt, when November rolls around and we're all scrambling to delete games, clips and more from our consoles and PCs, we probably won't be feeling quite so forthcoming.
