Sean McGeady
This groundbreaking generative documentary is as future-facing as its subject: pioneering musician, producer and multimedia artist Brian Eno. Directed by Gary Hustwit, Eno uses custom-built software to assemble its content in real time. The opening and ending are fixed but about 75 per cent of the film can unfold in near-infinite ways, drawn from hundreds of hours of footage. Will Roxy Music feature? Maybe. David Byrne? Depends. U2? You may need to watch it twice. None of this experimental storytelling would be worth much were the film's subject not fascinating. Fortunately, whether discussing his love of doo-wop, the daisies in his garden or the Berlin sessions with David Bowie, Eno is a pleasant and gently provocative person to spend time with. Though inspiring in content and form, Eno's generative nature makes it difficult to review or recommend - the version you see will never be seen again. That the documentary exists in a constant state of destruction and rebirth, however, is its greatest strength.
