Writer/director Riley Stearns (The Art of Self-Defense) doubles down on his deadpan style of film-making for this sly twist on doppelganger fiction. Karen Gillan plays a glum woman diagnosed with a terminal illness, who clones herself to spare her loved ones any pain. When she later goes into remission, she must battle her double (also Gillan) to the death, as a statute decrees that only one version of her may live. Forgoing the potential for extravagant clone wars, Stearns plays the ensuing tale as a poker-faced comedy of emotional dysfunction. While Gillan's combat-training scenes with Aaron Paul prove witty, her dismal personal relationships are less successful. Stearns' mannered direction can verge on stifling, but Gillan makes for an intriguing, laconic lead, and sustains the film all the way to the climax, where a keenly suggestive sting in the tale awaits.
