Summary

Period drama starring Jenny Agutter and Sheridan Smith. In 1944, three young siblings are evacuated from London to Yorkshire, where they are taken in by Bobbie Waterbury and her adult daughter, Annie. There the children must get used to a new life away from home, just like Bobby had to when she was young.

This belated sequel to the 1970 family film classic cleverly moves the story on from the Edwardian era to wartime Britain. In 1944, three evacuees - played by Beau Gadsdon, Eden Hamilton and Zac Cudby - are sent by their mother to the Yorkshire village of Oakworth. Taking them in are Bobbie Waterbury (Jenny Agutter, reprising her role from the first film) and her daughter (Sheridan Smith). Wholesome antics await, though the plot comes into focus when the children discover an injured American soldier (KJ Aikens) who needs help. Parallels to the original abound, from John Bradley (Game of Thrones) as the grandson of Bernard Cribbins's beloved station porter, to the evacuees' plight reflecting Bobbie's own childhood displacement. Yet, nothing feels forced in this gentle tale that rekindles the spirit of its predecessor and should fire the imaginations of kids and adults alike.
