Summary
Sci-fi action adventure based on the DC Comics superhero, starring Xolo Maridueña. After graduating from Gotham University, Jaime Reyes returns home to his family, who have been threatened with eviction after the loss of their business. Jaime applies for a high-paid job at Kord Industries but is turned down by boss Victoria Kord. However, on the way out, he is secretly given a lunchbox containing an alien blue scarab that endows Jaime with an array of remarkable superpowers.

This madcap superhero film sees an immigrant Mexican family battling an evil mega-corporation in the USA. After bonding with a sentient alien scarab, 20-something Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) acquires special powers, and goes up against the nefarious boss of Kord Industries (Susan Sarandon), who needs the scarab to fuel a new line of cyborg supersoldiers. This isn't all about Jaime, though, as his parents (played by Elpidia Carrillo and Damián Alcázar), grandma (Adriana Barraza), sister and uncle all get in on the action, too. The Reyes family are by far the best thing about this otherwise by-the-numbers caper. Funny, endearing and surprising, they recall the family in The Incredibles, and give the story its heart. Sadly, the plot, main villains and action sequences all feel wearyingly familiar, and the relationship between Jaime and his suit's AI feels like a less interesting retread of Venom. DC fans will have fun spotting Easter eggs, though - and while the final showdown is a little too long, it contains some moments that will have you punching the air.
