Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This action-packed fantasy adventure sees Emily Blunt's prim-and-proper scientist hire Dwayne Johnson's rugged steamboat skipper to transport her deep into the jungle in search of a tree thought to have magic healing properties. Unsurprisingly, the mission is fraught with obstacles and danger, as the daring explorers face all manner of wild beasties, while also racing against a rival German expedition that wants the tree for not altogether well-intentioned purposes. Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft is the obvious and largely accurate template, but with a richer seam of humour, the jeopardy laced with a healthy helping of jokes. Blunt makes for a spirited hero, while Johnson proves himself to be more than just muscle, his precise comic timing and talent for self-mockery adding flesh to the bones of this engaging swashbuckler.
