Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Dave Aldridge

Netflix's first original animated film, Klaus is a Christmas tale with a difference: less bright, shiny and American than usual, more dark and slightly Scandi noir, but with a nicely warm heart. Deemed a second-class male by his postal academy superiors, inept Jesper is put on ice via a posting to a remote island deep in the Arctic Circle. Dank and dour, the cheerless place is home to two fighting, feuding families. But Jesper, in cahoots with an angry schoolmarm and a woodsman with a knack for toy-making, manages to bring peace, if not on Earth, then at least to the island. In the process, they unwittingly but cleverly conjure all the elements of the traditional Santa story, from gift-giving to a flying sled and reindeer. Animated in Spain but with an American voice cast (Jason Schwartzman, Rashida Jones, JK Simmons), Klaus is a pleasant and entertaining alternative to the usual saccharine seasonal fare.
