The third film in the hugely successful horror series takes us back to the first day of the terrifying extra-terrestrial invasion, as New York City is plunged into chaos. The story revolves around two new figures: a poet undergoing advanced cancer treatment (Lupita Nyong'o) and an English expat (Joseph Quinn) who aids her - and her adorable cat Frodo -on her mission to get one last pizza slice. Given it unfolds against one of the world's vastest metropolises, you might expect Day One to be on a grander scale than the previous films, but some moments of mega carnage notwithstanding, this is an intimate and, well, quiet affair: an understated short story set within the Quiet Place world. Where the first two films explored how an existing family unit continued to survive years after the invasion, here we watch a new bond form directly against the apocalyptic backdrop. This dynamic is poignantly handled by director Michael Sarnoski (Pig) who crafts a sombre mood and explores deep themes of finding meaning amid destruction.
