Post-war crime drama The Bletchley Circle is set to return for a second, longer series on ITV later this year.
Centering on a group of women who worked at top-secret codebreaking facility Bletchley Park during World War II, the series is set in the 1950s as the friends struggle to return to their pre-war roles. Its stars Anna Maxwell Martin, Rachael Stirling, Sophie Rundle and Julie Graham.
The first series saw their mundane daily lives turned on their heads when the group started using their extraordinary skills to solve a murder case.
This new series will be set a year after the events of the last season and will see the codebreakers come together to help their former colleague Alice Merren (played by Olivier award nominee Hattie Morahan) who is accused of murder. While Alice awaits her fate in Holloway Prison the girls band together to try and prove her innocence.
The popular series was three episodes long when it premiered last summer, but the detective drama will return for a longer run this year, with two stories played out across four episodes.
Of the recommissioning, Steve November, ITV’s director of drama commissioning, said: “The Bletchley Circle is a wonderful addition to our drama slate last year and we’re delighted that it’s returning to ITV with two new and exciting stories.”
