Matt Smith's favourite is Amy Pond, but RadioTimes.com users have voted Billie Piper's character Rose Tyler the best Doctor Who companion of all time.

As Rose, Piper was the first companion of the modern Doctor Who era, sharing adventures in time and space with Christopher Ecclestone and David Tennant, the Ninth and Tenth Doctors.

She was separated from the Time Lord at the end of the second series but made brief returns in later stories.

In a survey of over 3,300 Who fans, Rose just pipped Elisabeth Sladen's Sarah Jane Smith to the top spot, with Donna Noble, played by Catherine Tate, some way behind in third place.

K-9, The Doctor's robot dog and, more recently, Sarah Jane's faithful friend, was voted the fourth favourite sidekick, while the Eleventh Doctor's companion Amy Pond Karen Gillan also made it into the top five.
