Romantic drama starring Isabelle Huppert and Kévin Azaïs. A faded Eurovision Song Contest singer falls in love with a young fan and attempts a comeback.
Isabelle Huppert dazzles again in a touching and melancholy May-December romance laced with subtle comedy and a delicious Eurovision-style twist. Here she plays Lilianne aka pop siren Laura, a former chanteuse who infamously came second to Abba in the Eurovision Song Contest that launched the Swedish band on the path to pop immortality. She now works anonymously on the packaging line in a Brussels pâté factory when besotted young boxer Kévin Azaïs instantly recognises the wilfully retired Laura and attempts to revive her music career as their passionate affair blossoms. However, the road to former glories is paved with age-gap concerns, family awkwardness and comeback insecurities in this wistful French fancy that tempers its kitschier elements with an uplifting and astute sweetness. Pink Martini provide the pitch-perfect songs - Laura's signature anthem Joli Garçon is a hummer - and while Eurovision lovers will be hoping for camper things given the irresistible premise, it does remain as feel-good, funny and consistently fizzy as the bubbly opening credits.
