Philip Glenister on Calendar Girls - Radio Times, August 2003

It may be the stellar female cast led by Julie Walters and Helen Mirren who are getting the plaudits for their portrayal of the famous WI Calendar Girls who "got their utensils out" for Leukaemia Research.

But one of the great unsung heroes is amateur photographer Terry Logan, husband of WI pin-up Lynda, without whom there'd be no calendar…and no film.

Logan, whose original shots are re-created in the movie, is the inspiration for the photographer, played by Clocking Off star Philip Glenister. "My character is fictional, but many of the events in the film happened to Logan," says Glenister.

When Logan took the "naked" pictures, the models made him do it from another room. But there were no such rules for Glenister ("The actresses were apprehensive, but they were very supportive of each other"). Though some could have worn bikinis, they made a pact to all go naked.

"I did try to put them at ease by offering to take my trousers off, but the room fell strangely silent. That was my one attempt at a heart-throb moment," he sighs.
