For four decades Doctor Who and Radio Times have been inseparable, with each key moment in the series marked by famous RT covers that have since become collectors' items. No other magazine in the world has this history with the show and no other covers are so prized.

The first Doctor (William Hartnell) and the first Radio Times cover - but not the first Doctor Who story. That first tale the previous November could have made the cover, and RT was at the very least considering it, but in those days the magazine was the journal of the BBC - and the BBC was having cold feet about little Doctor Who.
However, the show was practically an instant hit and the Doctor's fourth story, Marco Polo, won the cover. Even so, there was trouble: Hartnell was shown with guest stars and the main cast weren't happy. William "Ian" Russell's agent complained to the BBC's Donald Wilson, who apologised but said RT makes its own decisions about which photos to use. (Picture - Radio Times copyright) |
