Pools of sorrow, waves of joy. If you had told the Beatles in 1969 that film footage from sessions for their new album would eventually come to light as a Disney TV series, they’d have asked for some of what you were smoking. But here we are, with Beatles fans denied the chance to see Peter Jackson’s project (originally planned for a cinema release) unless they have a Disney+ streaming account.

Jackson insists that the reams of film he and his team have gathered, graded and polished show Let It Be wasn’t “the most miserable session on earth”, as John Lennon remembered it, but something special. Paul had suggested a return to the spontaneous music-making that brought the band together (“We’re going home,” he sang on the album’s first track). They were just four friends, playing together as they had when they were teenagers — and gelling musically, even at their most fractious, better than any four friends before or since.
