Just because DNA Journey is essentially Who Do You Think You Are? with added science bits and some ad breaks, doesn’t mean it can’t push those emotional buttons. Tonight’s series five opener with Hugh Bonneville and John Bishop shows how the paired format (the series is made by Ant & Dec’s production company) brings the best out of both celebs.

The key revelations concern why the pair have been put together – there’s always a reason in DNA Journey, and much of the hour is spent ferreting it out using genealogy, cutting-edge tech and old-fashioned archival legwork on a path that eventually leads them both back to Dublin. But the show works as much because of Hugh and John’s chemistry together (they met by chance in a Covid vaccination centre) as from the parallel bloodlines they uncover.
