Episode 5: Episode 5

Summary

A murder mystery event turns into a real crime scene when a famous Welsh actor and TV detective is found stabbed to death at the dinner table. Janie's investigation reveals a feud between siblings warring over property and their family's legacy. John rekindles his fledgling romance with the deceased's sister, but gets a hard lesson in the dangers of living in the past

Review

David Brown

Life is imitating art with Death Valley fast proving to be as popular with real-life viewers as the fictional crime drama Caesar obviously was in the world of the show. Yet tonight it’s revealed that John Chapel (Timothy Spall) had a TV detective rival, for while he was in his pomp on BBC1, fellow actor Anthony Hart was starring in Phoenix on ITV.

It’s a name that suggests immortality, but unfortunately Hart has proven to be all too ephemeral, getting stabbed to death midway through a murder mystery weekend. Yet every cloud has a silver lining, the sparkle here being the dead man’s sister Helena (guest star Patricia Hodge), who has a history with “Johnny” Chapel that once went way beyond the platonic.
