Damon Hill always looked more troubled than other racing drivers. His wife Georgie tells us in this moving documentary that Hill was “one of the saddest people I’ve ever come across”. That stemmed partly from his childhood: aged 15, Damon was watching TV with his sister when a newsflash announced that their father, Formula One driver Graham Hill, had died in a plane crash.

After that, Damon says, “It all went to pieces,” and he spent years trying to fix something he now realises couldn’t be fixed. It’s a powerful psychological undertow to the tale of his F1 peak in the mid-1990s, notably his on-track rivalry with Michael Schumacher. The film also offers a new angle on the shocking death of Hill’s teammate, Ayrton Senna. It makes for another taut tale from the F1 archives, given added heft by shrieking commentary from Murray Walker.
