Summary

Chilling science-fiction drama based on the novel by Aldous Huxley, starring Peter Gallagher and Leonard Nimoy. In a future society, humans are genetically engineered, long-term relationships have become a thing of the past and drug taking is routine. While on an excursion from this "brave new world", Bernard Marx becomes fascinated by John Cooper, a man who does not live by the rules. But Bernard's decision to take him back to the city leads to conflict.

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

This serious-minded TV adaptation of Aldous Huxley's classic study of a future dystopia is pitched somewhere between 1984 and Logan's Run, and the story's ideas on class, caste and civilisation survive better than in the previous 1980 mini-series. The casting of sci-fi superstar Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek's Mr Spock) guaranteed this a bigger audience, but the over-simplification of the premise - that society has been divided into hierarchical groups, that monogamy is frowned upon and that a state-prescribed drug pacifies the populace - will disappoint admirers of the novel.
