Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Director Chloé Zhao brings a sense of epic poetry to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with this soulful instalment that introduces a roster of new heroes. The powerful "Eternals" are a secret race of immortal beings who have lived on Earth for 7,000 years, making only scarce interventions in human affairs. As the film opens, eight months after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the planet is once again facing imminent devastation courtesy of a major cosmic event, prompting our heroes to reunite to save humanity. The usual spectacular set pieces balance nicely against Zhao's more naturalistic, intimate storytelling approach, which draws out the tragic and existential themes inherent to these godlike characters. This is not without Marvel's trademark wit - delivered mostly through Kumail Nanjiani's Kingo - or action, with Angelina Jolie bringing the fighting thrills as warrior Thena. But, on the whole, the film succeeds in becoming the series' most emotional outing.
