Writer/director Florian Zeller (The Father) here co-adapts his own play about a father wrestling with his teenage son's mental-health crisis. Hugh Jackman plays middle-aged success story Peter, whose much younger wife Beth (Vanessa Kirby) has recently given birth to a baby boy. Things get ugly when Peter's ex Kate (Laura Dern) informs him that their 17-year-old son Nicholas (Zen McGrath) has stopped going to school and is struggling with depression, leaving Peter with no choice but to take him in. There's credible work from McGrath in the tormented title role but the sidelining and lack of insight into his character can feel frustrating. Jackman captures some of the guilt and self-doubt that lurks behind Peter's fastidiously maintained facade, but is less convincing during the movie's more anguished scenes. An episode in a psychiatric facility that sees Peter and Kate facing an impossible dilemma brings the film's concerns into sharp focus, but much of what unfolds feels stiff and sanitised.
