Stephen King's Misery pondered what would happen if a bestselling author was imprisoned by a fan and forced to rewrite a novel. Blank uses the same premise, except that instead of Kathy Bates's obsessive fangirl we get Rita (Heida Reed), an android simply following orders. Rachel Shelley plays the author, Claire, who has so much trouble starting her latest book that she heads to a remote retreat. Everything there is run by AI: the only "person" she meets, other than Rita, is Wayne Brady's hologram, Henry. Then a virus infects the building and it goes into lockdown. Claire is trapped with the malfunctioning robot, a helpless Henry and a pile of blank pages. Reed is suitably creepy as the sinister Rita, while Shelley gives a spirited performance. It's just a pity that the pace is so glacial and the novel's subject matter, acted out alongside the main plot, is deeply unpleasant to engage with.
