Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This broadly comic, fictionalised account of the rise of a female-voice choir (in real life encouraged by TV's Gareth Malone, who's airbrushed out of the story), follows a group of women as they unite to sing at a British Army base while their partners tour Afghanistan. A class struggle ensues between Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan's opinionated crooners: the former a bereaved and entitled officer's wife; the latter a laid-back slob who just wants to sing 1980s pop hits. Their mutual resentment is nicely simmered by Full Monty director Peter Cattaneo, while subplots include Lara Rossi's tone-deaf siren and Gaby French's stage-fright-struck raw talent. The group's invitation to sing at an Albert Hall remembrance bash provides the climax, which is somewhat preordained by the feel-good genre, but will nonetheless have all but the hard-hearted on their feet, cheering and crying.
