Summary
Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones headline a gripping seven-part dramatisation of Jon Krakauer's non-fiction novel, which has been adapted for the screen by Dustin Lance Black for director David Mackenzie. Detective Jeb Pyre (Garfield), a devout Mormon, and Detective Bill Taba (Gil Birmingham) investigate the brutal 1984 murders of Brenda Wright Lafferty (Edgar-Jones) and her baby daughter in a quiet suburb in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah. Brenda was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and police enquiries unearth shocking secrets about the Lafferty family and their unyielding faith. Pyre is compelled to question his own devotion to the Lord as he exposes violence and retribution in the name of religion.

The Brits are out in force in this US crime drama that is based on the non-fiction book by Into the Wild author Jon Krakauer.
Andrew Garfield is a cop whom we can see straightaway is something different to the norm: when he attends an admittedly brutal murder scene, he breaks down in tears. Billy Howle, so good in The Beast Must Die, is the blood-soaked husband of the victim, who naturally becomes the chief suspect; in flashback we see that victim is Brenda, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones of Normal People fame.
Measured, atmospheric and brilliantly shot and acted, this series is indeed different to the true-crime norm: it’s set in Utah, where it seems the Mormon faith can cause people to behave in all kinds of disturbing ways.
