Episode 1: Protection

Summary

Police officer DI Liz Nyles works in the secretive and high-stakes world of Witness Protection. One morning, a devastating incident at work raises grave questions about the integrity of Liz's unit, which is rocked with accusations of corruption. Drama, starring Siobhan Finneran

Review

David Brown

Some unfortunate scheduling is going on here, as this series and BBC4 crime drama The One That Got Away appear to share the same set-up. Both feature a female detective (here it’s Siobhan Finneran as DI Liz Nyles) who is having an ill-advised fling with a married male colleague while also caring for a father with dementia.

Admittedly, TV cops with chaotic work and personal lives are nothing new, but an identical mess? Someone really ought to set up a support group. Where this show differs, though, is in Nyles’s role as a police officer, which is to keep a family safely guarded in a witness protection scheme before a high-profile trial.

However, to her surprise (if not the viewer’s, as you’ll be a couple of paces ahead of the plot), this safe house turns out to be anything but. And when it all kicks off, we soon start to detect a whiff of conspiracy along with cordite in the atmosphere. There’s more tomorrow at 9pm.
