Review

David Butcher

Drape yourself on a chaise longue and feast your eyes on Julian Fellowes’s plump creation. As you might hope, it’s full of well-drawn characters, complicated dresses and interiors you could cut with a cake slice. Unlike Bridgerton, it also feels fully rooted — as the title suggests — in a historical time and place: New York in the 1880s, and specifi cally the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 61st Street, where the Russell family has built a vast house with wealth from the railway boom.

George (Morgan Spector) is a ruthless tycoon and Bertha (Carrie Coon) a fierce social climber. But she meets her match in the snooty Upper East Side, where across the road lives old money in the form of waspish widow Agnes (Christine Baranski in what you might call the Maggie Smith role).

Agnes and her sister (Cynthia Nixon) take in their orphaned niece Marion (excellent newcomer Louisa Jacobson), whose smart, steely personality looks set to shake things up.
