A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This delightful, low-budget Irish musical drama is the sort of film that will put a smile on your face and a satisfied spring in your step. It's the tale of two kindred souls (played by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova) who meet on the streets of Dublin. He's a busker with his sights set on London and a recording contract; she's an immigrant Czech pianist with a daughter. They discover a mutual love of song and wind up making beautiful music together, both personally and professionally. Their blossoming relationship is depicted both conventionally and through the songs they write. The stars are clearly capable musicians for real, with Hansard also known for his role as guitarist Outspan Foster in The Commitments. The result is a sweet little charmer that shows that a film made for relative peanuts can still pack more of an emotional wallop than a dozen bloated blockbusters. A small pleasure.
