James Mottram

Reggae icon Bob Marley's life is captured in this misfiring biopic, which traces his stratospheric rise to become one of the most important voices of his generation. Complete with perfectly in-tune Jamaican accent, Kingsley Ben-Adir impresses as Marley, as does Lashana Lynch as Rita, the wife by his side throughout the mania. While there is plenty of marvellous music to enjoy, particularly in the well-staged concert scenes, it's often used in a clichéd way - I Shot The Sheriff, for example, plays after the star is injured in a shoot-out. Director Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard) also succumbs to corny montages, as albums fly off the shelves, while James Norton is hugely miscast as Island Records head Chris Blackwell. Marley's achievements - including bringing together rival Jamaican politicians - are also talked about, rather than dramatised. A superficial tribute, this never really gets under Marley's skin.
