Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Director Barry Levinson, working for Steven Spielberg's production company Amblin, gives a sensational, even supernatural, slant to this supposed biography of the young sleuth, which is hardly surprising considering the film's pedigree. As an account of the detective team's first meeting at boarding school, it's quite commendable - Nicholas Rowe is a dashing Holmes, Alan Cox a solid Watson - but some Holmes aficionados may miss the proper atmosphere of hansom cabs and ugly deeds. However, the production design by Norman Reynolds (Raiders of the Lost Ark) is fabulous, not least when our Victorian dynamic duo finds themselves in the Pyramid of Fear in the film's climax.
