Calum Baker

This dreamy, low-key drama makes wonderful use of the titular city's striking modernist buildings. John Cho stars as a translator who is called to tend to his estranged father, an architecture professor who has fallen into a coma while visiting Columbus, Indiana. During his stay, Cho meets a young librarian (Haley Lu Richardson) who has her own parental issues - as well as a deep love of architecture. She guides him around town for a few days and the two soon develop a close bond. If the calm, meditative plotting feels like something of an indie cliché, the leads' careful performances ensure that the constant walking and talking remains engaging. Making his feature debut, Korean American film-maker Kogonada puts his background in visual essay-making to good use, crafting a pleasant aesthetic from the colours and shapes of Columbus. While the characters are often swallowed up by the amazing buildings, their humanity never fades in this sweet and memorable drama.
