Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Michael Myers returns in this brutal and ambitious, if not wholly successful, sequel to the franchise-rebooting Halloween (2018). Set on the same night as that film, Halloween Kills sees Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) hospitalised, leaving a gang of rabble-rousing locals to take up arms against the bogeyman. Among them are Tommy (Michael C Hall) and Lindsey (Kyle Richards), the kids Laurie babysat in the original Halloween (1978), plus Laurie's daughter (Judy Greer) and granddaughter (Andi Matichak). The premise ups the ante considerably, with shocking levels of violence, and David Gordon Green excels at portraying the escalating chaos as angry townspeople rampage. There are also expertly staged flashbacks to the night Michael first came home, plus a return to the creepy Myers house, now owned by a gay couple. It's a shame, though, that the legacy characters are underutilised, and the film lacks a satisfying finale, its eye clearly on trilogy-capper Halloween Ends. The mixed result will either delight or appal hardcore fans, as the series further sidelines Laurie Strode in favour of an expanded mythology. Still, this is an impressively artful and ruthless sequel, and its depiction of fear and unbridled rage is chilling.
