Summary
Animated comedy drama featuring the voices of Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. A strain of contagious canine flu spreads through the futuristic city of Megasaki, leading the mayor to banish all dogs to Trash Island. Six months later, 12-year-old orphan Atari sneaks onto the island in search of his pal Spots, and discovers the bizarre and sometimes brutal society the exiled pooches have created for themselves.

A prologue presented in decorative, calligraphic style sets the scene for Wes Anderson's second feature-length stop-motion animation (after Fantastic Mr Fox), which takes place in a futuristic Japan where canine flu has turned man's best friend into his worst enemy and a dictatorial mayor (voiced by co-writer Kunichi Nomura) banishes dogs to a rubbish-tip island. Designed in the director's trademark style of symmetrical layout and scrolling movement, it allows Anderson stock players like Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Murray (plus Bryan Cranston as a stray whose catchphrase is "I bite") to supply deadpan American voices to the malnourished mutts. A crash-landed boy pilot (Koyu Rankin) in search of his own dog inspires a picaresque that takes in a former show champ (Scarlett Johansson) and a show-stealing pug (Tilda Swinton), regarded as an oracle because she can interpret the TV. The whole, hermetically sealed world is idiosyncratically unique, while paying affectionate homage to Akira Kurosawa and Ukiyo-e woodblock print artist Hokusai. The lively drum-and-woodwind score by Alexandre Desplat (Oscar-winner for The Grand Budapest Hotel) feels ethnically sourced. While less suited to a young audience, and open to criticism for its Western interpretation of Eastern culture, it's ultimately steeped in affection and can be viewed as a work of cinematic art.
