In many ways, Sprinter is a standard sports drama that follows a predictable path, focussing on an ambitious dreamer who overcomes adversity. Naturally, the story builds towards a big sporting event, but the good news is that the film is also an effective, well-acted crowd-pleaser. Set in Jamaica, it tells the story of Akeem (Dale Elliott), a Rastafarian teenager who is set to become a superstar in the world of sprinting. Unfortunately, his prospects are hindered by various distractions and obstacles, including his older brother (Kadeem Wilson), who is involved in a dodgy lottery scam. From here, Akeem's journey plays out exactly as you might expect, but Elliott is easy to root for and the film is uplifting without being too cheesy. Yes, it contains the occasional corny moment but Sprinter ensures you want Akeem to succeed, which is what really matters.
