Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Silence is golden again in this marvellously sustained continuation of the twisted family drama that pitches silenced humans against blind insectoid monsters with super-sensitive hearing. The story sees the remaining Abbott family members (led by mum Emily Blunt) leave their unsafe farmhouse for an abandoned steel mill shelter with neighbour Emmett (Cillian Murphy) and head for an island radio station where hearing-impaired daughter Regan (a stand-out Millicent Simmonds) intends to broadcast the ear-splitting sounds that she discovered in the first film are the monsters' weakness. Returning director John Krasinski hits the ground running with a chilling flashback to how the space invasion started, then hurtles forwards to survival Day 474, from where he expertly manoeuvres three separate plot strands together for one prolonged, gasp-inducing sequence of top-notch terror. The superior sound design enormously helps to intensify the beautifully calibrated perils, adding further impressive frills to the high concept action of this agonisingly tense, wonderfully immersive movie.
