Just when you thought the Fast & Furious franchise couldn't get any more outlandish... along comes this spin-off that piledrives next-level thrills into stunt innovations with the cheekiest style. Those best of frenemies - lawman Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and rogue spy Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) - are forced to team up again to protect Shaw's MI6 agent sister Hattie (played by The Crown's break-out star Vanessa Kirby), who's trying to stop a supervirus from falling into the hands of a sinister bio-tech outfit aiming to engineer civilization extinction and repopulate Earth with cyber-enhanced humanity. The back-and-forth banter can be a little wearisome at times, but it does mark time between each bombastic burst of awe-inspiring escapist spectacle, with the vehicular daisy-chain finale worth admission price alone. However, Kirby is more than a charisma match for the endearingly dynamic headline duo and nasty Idris Elba certainly has his moments as Brixton, the electronically enhanced villain ("I'm Black Superman!") and former Shaw rival. It may be absurd but John Wick director David Leitch still manages to serve up extravagant and astonishing entertainment par excellence.
