Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

"This is stupid," says disabled hero Dwayne Johnson during yet more outlandish action in this Die Hard meets The Towering Inferno in Hong Kong disaster piece. Looking on, it's hard to disagree with his analysis while still thrilling to every moment of laughably melodramatic mayhem dispensed by director Rawson Marshall Thurber, again using his star's charisma to elevate the silly escapism as he did with Central Intelligence. Johnson plays a skyscraper security assessor who has cleared The Pearl, the world's tallest building, as safe for residential use. When the 96th floor is set ablaze by terrorists searching for an incriminating hard drive, Johnson is framed for the deed. With the police in pursuit, he must fight to rescue his family who are trapped above the building's fire line. It's as harebrained as it is hair-raising - the aerial stunts are truly vertigo-inducing - and overloaded with cardboard villains, daft dialogue and ingenious uses for duct tape.
