Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

If you like your adventure yarns with jokey snatches of edgy terrorist violence Jalmari Helander's follow-up to the dark, cult Christmas thriller Rare Exports is a pleasing enough escapist diversion. During a traditional rite-of-passage solo hunt in the scenic Finnish mountains, young Onni Tommila (the kid from Exports) saves the US President (Samuel L Jackson) from assassination after Air Force One is shot down in a coup attempt. The cliffhanger action beats are outlandish verging on the cartoon - ruthless Secret Service man Ray Stevenson parachuting through a missile onslaught, an ejector seat flight over a nuclear explosion - but the direction is lively, and things move at a brisk clip. Jim Broadbent is eyebrow-raising as a shady intelligence expert and reflective Tommila and brash Jackson form a nice double act, each underdogs in their own community, each learning bravery from the other.
