Dr Caitlin Todd's (Caroline Harker) dangerous game has continued in Emmerdale, with Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) becoming increasingly concerned that her big secret is on the brink of exposure.

Last month, the surgeon had learnt that, while trying to act as surrogate for granddaughter Sarah (Katie Hill) and her husband Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant), Charity had actually fallen pregnant with Ross Barton's (Michael Parr) child. Initially, in exchange for her silence, she only asked for Charity to stop Jacob from pursuing his HR complaint against her.

However, the matter escalated when Todd continued to manipulate and bully Jacob, and he decided that speaking up was the right thing to do.

The HR representative advised that a number of other colleagues had similar concerns, and as a result, Todd decided to take early retirement before she could be suspended.

Having lost a large chunk of her pension, she now sought other ways to make the money back. Having kept Charity's secret up her sleeve, she approached her with a demand for £10,000.

Todd promised that once she had this cash, she'd leave the village for a new life at the house her late father had left for her. Charity panicked, knowing that she'd never be able to find that amount of money overnight.

Tightening her grip, Todd refused to accept the couple of thousand that her victim had managed to muster together, and warned that the clock was ticking. She'd also discovered that Charity owned half of The Woolpack, and therefore she'd be able to siphon even more money from her – £100,000.

In today's episode, Charity was devastated to realise that her loan extension had been declined. Todd waltzed into the pub and demanded a round of drinks on the house, something which was witnessed by Sarah.

Sarah had questions about the tensions between them both, and Charity had to quickly cover, saying that she'd mistakenly scratched the doctor's car and that she was demanding a hefty sum for repairs.

Knowing that the only way to escape her hellish situation would be to sell up her Woolie shares, she approached Caleb and Ruby Miligan (William Ash and Beth Cordingly). Caleb knew that Charity wouldn't be prepared to give up the boozer without good reason, though she refused to open up.

He reassured her that they were family, and that he would always be on hand if she needed him.

Upon returning home to Jacob's Fold, Charity nipped upstairs and left baby Leyla unattended. She was stunned to find Dr Todd holding the child, warning that anything could happen to a baby that had been left alone, and that she should be more careful in future.

She reaffirmed how much cash she wanted, and said that the deadline was firmly in place - one week.

How will Charity escape this nightmare?
