Episode 1: Kick Off

Summary

Alan Carr's semi-autobiographical comedy set in 1980s Northampton. Having a father who's the football manager of a Fourth Division club is never going to be easy, but when his friends drop him for being camp, Alan decides to take things into his own hands. Should he go against his own instincts and become a footballer himself? Shaun Dooley and Alan Carr himself star

Review

David Brown

This wry semi-autobiographical comedy from Alan Carr is for any child of the 1980s who lived in abject fear of PE — and the communal showers in particular. Imagine an adenoidal Adrian Mole and you’re in the right ballpark. Or rather football pitch, as
the young Alan (Oliver Savell, a revelation) is the offspring of Northampton Town FC manager Graham Carr (Shaun Dooley), who in episode one raises concerns that his son isn’t “normal”.

And if abnormal means an 11-year-old obsessing over Murder, She Wrote rather than Match of the Day, then Alan is the dictionary definition. With large specs, even larger teeth and “the voice of an old lady”, life isn’t easy.

But what’s especially winning about this series (first made available last year on ITVX) is that Alan refuses to compromise — and the touchline commentary from the adult Alan reminds viewers of who gets to have the last laugh. A second run is already in production, so now’s the ideal time to catch this first outing for the Carr clan.
