Episode 1: A Smoggie Break-Up

Summary

Comedy about a gang of friends who are fiercely proud of their north-eastern town of Middlesbrough and their small pocket of the LGBTQ+ community. Dickie's friends rally around him when his boyfriend dumps him on the doorstep. He vows to fight for his love and win back his man. Written by and starring Phil Dunning, with Mark Benton, Alexandra Mardell, Patsy Lowe and Elijah Young

Review

Daisy Jackson

The brainchild of Middlesbrough actor and comedian Phil Dunning, this is a sassy, funny, big-hearted sitcom that follows the lives of lairy Dickie (Dunning) and his “chosen family” — drag-queen matriarch Mam (Mark Benton), secretly smart Lucinda (Alexandra Mardell), singer- songwriter and nit magnet Sal (Patsy Lowe) and newbie “baby gay” Stewart (Elijah Young).

We learn a lot about the Smoggies (a term for Teessiders who don’t conform) and their bond in this opening double bill, as they support Dickie through his dramatic break-up — and toe-curling attempt to reunite — with the love of his life. At one point Dickie proclaims, “We are who we are: strong, fierce, and unreservedly queer.” We would add “immensely entertaining” to boot.
