Review

David Brown

This is a classic underdog-against-the-odds drama centred around the triumphs and failures of Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy), an orphaned Kentucky chess prodigy with self-destructive vices. The 50s and 60s setting is impeccably evoked, the pace is well sustained over eight episodes, while a true sense of tension mounts as Beth becomes reliant on both tranquillisers and alcohol.

Look out for appearances by two former child stars: Love Actually’s Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Harry Melling (Harry Potter), both featuring as professional chess players posing a threat to Beth’s career.
