“Heavy on style, light on substance” was the gist of some critical jibes at Peaky Blinders when it began. The series certainly looks incredible – like a comic-book western that has landed in 1920s Birmingham – but some thought that perhaps there was less going on than met the eye.

Not me. I lapped up Steven Knight’s tale of illegal bookies with razorblades in their caps. It may not be quite the multilayered HBO-style saga it aspires to (it has a fraction of the budget, for a start), but its characters and setting are full of a grim soulfulness – with songs from the likes of Tom Waits to flesh out the mood.

The small-hours repeats of the gangster saga arrive at series two. As we revisit the soot-dimmed terraces of 1920s Small Heath in Birmingham, two years have passed since the end of series one and dolorous gang boss Tommy (Cillian Murphy) is looking to expand his empire.

His plan to form an alliance with a London crew leads to a meeting with their boss, played by Tom Hardy with the kind of bravura turn that threatens to run off with the whole show. Then again, Sam Neill is no slouch: he’s also back (and angry) as devious rogue cop Major Campbell, and his Ulster accent remains a thing of beauty.
