Peaky Blinders has grown into an industry, a phenomenon. It has inspired festivals, theme bars, haircuts and TV imitators, but underneath the hoopla it’s simply a classy crime saga with a killer soundtrack (from Tom Waits to Bowie) and accents you rarely hear on TV.

If you’ve avoided 1920s Birmingham and its gang wars, you have a treat ahead. No other drama blends violence, sadness and pure cinematic panache quite so well – albeit with visuals in 50 shades of grey. Our (anti)hero is Tommy Shelby, head of a crime family built on fixed bookies and protection rackets. As played by Cillian Murphy, Tommy stands as one of the great screen gangsters – up there with the Corleones and Sopranos, only more likely to ride in on a horse or a canal boat.

Bursts of violence slash through the story but at its core it’s about grief, love and the way family can be your staunchest allies – and worst enemies.
