Episode 1: First Night of the Proms
Summary
Clive Myrie is joined by guests Sandi Toksvig and Anna Lapwood for the First Night of the Proms live from the Royal Albert Hall. This year's eight-week long musical extravaganza launches in style with Sibelius's ever popular Finlandia, Grieg's dramatic Piano Concerto performed by classical superstar Paul Lewis, and Britten's much-loved The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. The concert also includes a rare opportunity to hear Sibelius's Snofrid, making its Proms debut, and a world premiere from Ukrainian composer Bohdana Frolyak. The programme is performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, with the BBC Symphony Chorus and BBC Singers, under the baton of principal guest conductor Dalia Stasevska

A magnificent programme to launch the season — much of it with a Nordic air — starts with Sibelius’s dramatic powerhouse Finlandia. There’s also a rare chance to hear the composer’s Snofrid, a stirring piece for choir and orchestra that has never been performed at the Proms before. Classical superstar Paul Lewis performs Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor (with all the right notes necessarily in the right order).
We’ll hear a world premiere from Ukrainian composer Bohdana Frolyak called Let There Be Light. Rounding off the evening, a nostalgic rush of schooldays music lessons is guaranteed by The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra by Benjamin Britten.
Dalia Stasevska (a Finn who’s proud of her Ukrainian roots) conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Chorus — as well as the BBC Singers, who rightly won a reprieve from disbandment a few months ago.
As last year, Clive Myrie is on the launch pad at the Royal Albert Hall as our host and point of information between compositions with his guests, Sandi Toksvig and Anna Lapwood, who has her own solo organ recital Prom on 25 July.
