Tom Hardy takes on the bruising lead role in this compelling action flick from writer/director Gareth Evans, known for his acclaimed work on The Raid films and TV's Gangs of London. Hardy plays a detective with a troubled past who, after a drug deal gone wrong, becomes embroiled in a fast-moving plot involving the son of a corrupt politician, a bunch of crooked cops, and some vengeful members of a Chinese crime syndicate. As far as the narrative goes, the film largely trades in clichés and stock characters, with all of the action unfolding in a nameless city rife with vice and crime. Meanwhile, the emotional throughline focusing on Hardy's relationship with his unseen daughter feels rather tacked on. However, the film comes alive in its kinetic, bone-crunching action sequences, choreographed with real skill by Evans. The big centrepiece scene - which takes place in a nightclub - is an ultra-violent highlight, and the film boasts an impressively grimy texture that sets it apart from the bulk of made-for-streaming action fare.
